MIKE PLOOG
Mike Ploog is commonly thought of as one of Marvel Comics' best artists for his work on such 70's classics as "Werewolf by Night," "Ghost Rider," "Frankenstein," "Kull the Destroyer" and "Manthing." He also completed a long run on Marvel's "Planet of the Apes" magazine, as well as single-issue stints on "Conan" and "Savage Sword of Conan."
Ploog's roots in comics lie in the three years he worked under comic legend Will Eisner, drawing for Eisner's "PS Magazine" (a military magazine). After Eisner lost the military contract for "PS Magazine," Ploog sought out work elsewhere. His trails led him to Warren Magazine, where he did only four or five stories until, for financial reasons, he moved on.
After his short stay with Warren, Ploog approached Marvel Comics in 1971 with samples in hand. At that time, an editor at Marvel thought his work was too "cartoony" and handed him samples of Marvel pages, asking him to "draw like that." PLoog said, "No, I can't draw like that," and left Marvel's offices. Two weeks later, he received an unexpected phone call from Marvel asking if he was interested in doing a werewolf book "his way." Ploog gladly accepted and the rest is history! Along with "Werewolf by Night," Ploog took on nearly the entire line of Marvel's monster titles with tremendous success.
After a tenure that lasted approximately five years with Marvel, Ploog left to pursue work in the motion picture industry. he left comics, not because he would rather do movie work but, for the simple reason that he felt he needed more storytelling experience. Since that time, he has worked on such films as "Lord of the Rings," "Wizards," "Heavy Metal," "Young Sherlock Holmes," John Carpenter's "The Thing," "Supergirl," and many more.
In 1993, FPG approached Ploog with the idea of doing a trading card series. Ploog accepted with the knowledge that he would be creating 90 new paintings for this project, but actually looked forward to it immensely! "Finally, a chance to paint all the pictures I've wanted to create over the years, but never had an opportunity to do!" exclaimed Ploog.
The box of cards you now hold in your hands contains the final results of well over a year's work and dedication by Mike toward this project. We hope you will agree that the end results are quite fantastic! Truly, this is the ultimate Mike Ploog collection.
