The Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.) is a clandestine agency within the United States government that employs agents with "special abilities" to beat back the forces of darkness. Often led by the powerful, yet tender-hearted Hellboy, the B.P.R.D. is a group of paranormal heroes with extraordinary talents, including a girl who can control fire, a water-breathing being of mysterious origins, and several members who are already dead - or were never alive to begin with. When other heroes flee and fail, the B.P.R.D. is there.

- HELLBOY
Hellboy is a demon and the spawn of a frightful dimension, but his outward appearance belies his true benevolent nature. A member of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D.), he works to protect mankind from the horrors that "go bump in the night."
- ABE SAPIEN
Found in a jar with the label icthyo sapien in the basement of a Washington, D.C. hospital, Abe Sapien is a water-breathing member of the B.P.R.D. A superior marksman and hand-to-hand combatant, Abe is also the spriritual backbone of the Bureau.
- LIZ SHERMAN
Liz became a ward of the B.P.R.D. at the age of eleven, when the violent emergence of her pyrokinetic abilities resulted in the deaths of over thirty people, including her immediate family. She has spent the intervening years struggling to control her abilities and cope with the trauma that they have wrought.
- JOHANN KRAUS
Johann's body was incinerated in a psychic disaster, but his spirit remained intact. The B.P.R.D. recruited Johann as a special agent and developed a special suit to contain his ectoplasmic essence. Even disembodied, Johann remains a gifted medium who can communicate freely with the dead.
- ROGER THE HOMUNCULUS
Roger was created in the sixteenth century, but lay dormant until Liz Sherman found him and temporarily transferred her pyrokinetic energy to him. Now fitted with a portable generator, Roger has become an enthusiastic member of the B.P.R.D.
- CAPTAIN BEN DAIMIO
Captain Daimio's distinguished military career ended in 2001, when he was killed during a mission. However, Daimio spontaneously returned to life and now serves as commander of the B.P.R.D. field team.
- HELLBABY
As an infant, the demon Hellboy was summoned to earth by a Nazi occult experiement. Fortunately, his appearance was anticipated by the Allies, who intercepted the "Hellbaby" and brought him back to the United States.
